Fur-Baby-Friendly Home Buying: A Checklist for Pet Parents

Are you a proud pet parent on the hunt for a new home? Whether you have a loyal canine companion, a frisky feline friend, or any other furry family member, finding a pet-friendly property is crucial for both you and your beloved animal. From spacious yards to pet-safe features, here are five essential tips to consider when embarking on your house-hunting journey.

Look for a yard with a fence.

Most pets will appreciate a safe place where they can be outside and safe at the same time. A fenced-in yard is the perfect place for your four-legged friend(s) to run, play, enjoy the sunshine, and "do their business." A good fence ensures your pet is safe and secure, no matter how much time they like to spend outdoors.

Make sure you can take neighborhood walks.

A community that is safe and has sidewalks and/or walking trails is ideal for enjoying the outdoors with your pet. As you stroll, your pet can become a catalyst for connecting with neighbors, creating a supportive network that enhances both your and your pet's well-being.

Ensure pet services are near your new home.

You may need resources like a veterinarian, a groomer, a pet supply store, a dog park, etc., so you'll want to check that these services are close enough to your new home for convenient access.

Determine the home is accessible, safe, and comfortable.

Some pets struggle to navigate stairs, so a single-level home might be best. For pets that use a litter box, think about where that will be kept and how the animal with access it. Consider where you'll store pet supplies. Where will your fur-baby eat? Sleep? Play? Will you need to install a pet door?

Choose the best flooring for your pet.

Vinyl flooring is easy to clean when it comes to pet accidents. Carpet may hide pet hair better than other types of flooring. You know your pet and your housekeeping habits, so choose what works best for your family.

By keeping these essential tips in mind, you can navigate the real estate market with confidence and find the perfect, new, pet-friendly home for you and your four-legged family members.
